Turning the Horqin Desert into the Timberland Forest

The Horqin Project is a large-scale tree planting initiative designed to reverse massive desertification. Due to its rich water and grass resources, Horqin was once called the Horqin Pasture. Overgrazing of the land led to desertification, and the Horqin Pasture gradually turned into the Horqin Desert, resulting in terrible sandstorms that sweep across China and neighboring countries.

Since 2001, Timberland employees and partners volunteered 37 million hours of their time to plant the Timberland forest. What started out as a partnership between Timberland, its NGO partner Green Net, and the local Horqin farming community, is now a collaborative effort that has been recognized by Chinese celebrities, citizens and the media.

@hablerz I wouldn't say it's bullshit but climate changes almost all the time and I doubt that it's because of co2 I think that the theory some people have about it is bullshit.

I wonder if they even thought it through and did research before they decided to just plant pine trees all over the place

Nobel prizes prove nothing and drought has thrived at times when the winters were stronger and when the springs and summers were cooler. CO2 is a nutrient to the ecosystem, the plants breathe it to give out O2. Many scientists agree that climate change is natural and that man is not responsible for it, Al Gore is just a billionaire tycoon who wants to millions out of green energy.

If they want to end drought, then build a desalinator. Australia is taking use of that already.

I am afraid you are wrong, there are now predictions that we are heading towards a mini ice age and we are now facing huge drops in world temperatures so there is hardly any speed at all.

What an absolute load of crap! Snowfall is far more heavy and world temperatures have dropped below 0.5oC since last year. Antarctica and the Arctic melt but then normalise as part of a lifecycle. 97% of "world's scientists" is bogus, that claim was based only on 75 out of 77 scientists when asked about the climate. Greenland melted in the Medieval Warm period- more warmer today than that time! Global warming is anthropogenic lies and myths!

How about that you read the facts and actually realise that world temperatures are far lower than they were predicted to be and for the fact that the Medieval Warm Period was a lot warmer than it was today in which you could grow wine in Scotland and crops in Greenland which is far more difficult today.

Aside from CO2 emissions and temperature fluctuations — there is one thing purely anthropogenic — depletion and destuction of natural ecosystems. To far greater extent than it was in said medieval warm period.

It should be a polyculture of trees, If you plant nothing but pine trees, would not the soil become too acidic?

I am from Horqin region. I really appreciate what Timberland has done to my hometown. It is really a shame of the government. They did nothing and only dedicate to mining the coal and rare earths from Inner Mongolia without concerning the environment and the life of original herdsman.

The really good news is that around the world people are, slowly, working on restoring nature and not just debating climate change, desertification, soil erosion and the dozens of topics where we are in overshoot of Earth's carrying capacity. Here in Mexico reforestation, rainwater harvesting, rangeland restoration, and other projects are underway to retreat from the impossible dream of infinite growth on a finite planet.
